Grade 6: Math Enrichment
I am very excited to be teaching this new class. Sixth graders currently have a regularly scheduled math & ELA class each day, so when given the opportunity to teach an enrichment I was excited at the possibilities! Being primarily a computer class teacher, we will be making the most out of our computer lab and the wealth of resources on-line. We will use video tutorials and practice sites, as well as games to help to make this enrichment class both fun and productive. The main focus will be upon areas found within the Massachusetts ELA & Math Standards. (The specific standard covered will be listed.)
Headphones/Earbuds: A good deal of the computer work students will be doing will involve programs with audio
(sound). Students will mainly be working independently, so each can work at his/her own pace.
This means that each will need to use either headphones or earbuds, so they alone can hear the
program that they are involved with and they won't be distracted by the students working
nearby. The class has some headphones which students from my Enrichment students will be
sharing with my Keyboarding and 7th grade Computer Class, but it would be an advantage if
each student had their own set that they alone would use.
These do not need to be anything fancy. They could be an old pair from an iPod or CD player.
These could be either be brought to class daily, or we can store them safely within the room.
If stored within the room it would be nice to see either the student's initials, or first name written
on it in marker.
Our Class Schedule: In order to keep the class fresh and interesting. We will start out on a flexible 5 day schedule.
As the need or situation demands, we will modify our planned schedule.
Day 1: Math Skills
Day 2: Math Skills
Day 3: Problem Solving
Day 4: ELA / Grammar
Day 5: Reading Comprehension & Writing
Class Grading: Students grades will be based upon a combination of a number of factors including: on-line drills,
activities and quizzes, We will also have more traditional (paper & pencil) quizzes and activities as
well. I'm also planning a number of small projects that I hope will make this class even more
interesting! I believe students will have this class for all 3 trimesters and it has always been my
policy to keep parents informed. Should a child have a problem you can be sure I will contact
someone at home.
